Choosing a Divorce Attorney

Hiring an attorney may be the single most important decision you make in your divorce.  Look for an attorney with whom you feel comfortable, who strives to get clients the best result possible, and who prioritizes the client to make the process as smooth as possible.

In choosing an attorney, it’s important to focus on the overall value you’re getting. Although cost is a factor, quality is most important: the attorney’s reputation, experience, past results, philosophy, and accessibility to clients are all factors to consider.

Beware of attorneys that make promises.  An attorney that’s guaranteeing outcomes may be desperate for clients and your money.  It is  difficult to predict at the beginning of a case exactly how it proceed.  Some of the worst divorces begin as a dissolution; likewise, what may seem like a high-conflict case may quickly settle.  Good attorneys will give you bad news and provide you with realistic expectations about what is possible in terminating a marriage and do not incite you to make decisions based upon emotion.  Divorce is a legal process with the sole purpose of dividing your marital assets and resolving how your children will be cared for.

The attorney you choose to represent should be local, professional, knowledgeable in the area of family law, responsive and communicate well.  You should trust and feel comfortable with the attorney, and the attorney should support your basic philosophy toward divorce and has a style that works for you. Divorce is a highly personal and emotional process, the outcome of which can have a significant impact on your life. This is an important decision, and there are no guarantees in this process. However, if you follow these steps, you’ll find the right one — the one who listens to what you want, advises you truthfully and well,  and has your best interest at heart.
